Dental Crowns Can Transform Your Broken or Damaged Teeth

Are you looking for an effective restorative procedure to strengthen your teeth and cover up unattractive fillings or discoloration?

Crowns are “caps” that are typically used to fix teeth that have been partially damaged or broken. “Onlays” (partial crowns) are used to hold in a filling that has weakened. At Capitol-Hill Montlake Dentistry, our Seattle dentistry services can take care of all your dental crown needs.

Dental crowns offer many apparent benefits, such as:

  • Improve tooth shape
  • Fix broken or worn teeth
  • Strengthen teeth
  • Rescue teeth with portions destroyed by tooth decay
  • Holds existing fillings in place
  • Enhance color of teeth
  • Take into consideration your bite and jaw movements when designed
  • Model your tooth shape
  • Serve as a new outer shell for your teeth

With proper care, your new crown will increase your overall health and instill confidence for years to come.

What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a cover or "cap" used on your tooth to restore its normal shape, size and function. The purpose of a dental crown is to make the tooth stronger or improve the way your tooth looks.

What are the Different Types of Dental Crowns?

There are a few types of dental crowns:

  • Ceramic dental crowns
  • Porcelain dental crowns'
  • Resin dental crowns
  • Stainless steel (cosmetic) dental crowns

There are pros and cons to each type of dental crown and Dr. Chin will assess your specific situation to determine which type of crown is the best fit for you.

How is a Dental Crown Placed? How Long Does Treatment Take?

Generally at least 2 visits are needed for dental crowns treatment.

In your initial visit, we prepare the tooth by removing the outer portion so the crown will fit. If additional tooth structure is needed to support the crown we may need to build up the core of the tooth. An impression is made to provide an exact model for the crown. You will get a temporary crown while you wait for the permanent crown. We send the impression to our dental lab to create your permanent crown.

Wtihin about two weeks you will come back to the office to have the permanent dental crown placed in your mouth. At this point we will make any necessary adjustments. When we have it fitted comfortably we will cement it in place.

How Much Do Dental Crowns Cost?

Dental crowns can cost from several hundred to several thousand dollars. The cost of a dental crown depends on a few factors such as:

  • the materials used
  • the size, location and condition of the tooth

In order to provide an estimate on the cost of dental crowns, you need to schedule an initial visit with Dr. Henry Chin so he can assess your teeth and determine the severity of treatment needed.

Does Insurance Cover the Cost of Dental Crowns?

Today's health insurance, including your dental plan, is designed to help you get the care you need at a reasonable cost. Dental insurance coverage for dental crowns varies depending upon the plan but may cover up to 50% of the cost if the crown is needed for medical reasons.

Who is a Candidate for Dental Crowns?

If you have a fractured tooth, old broken down fillings, or a severely decayed tooth, a porcelain crown may be the best restorative option for your case. Dr. Henry Chin will discuss this option with you during your initial consultation at our Seattle dental practice.

Our office designs crowns made out of porcelain, metal or both. Our technicians will carefully design crowns that perfectly fit the shape of your tooth. Call our office at (201) 621-1233 to request more information!
